 A classic - an absolute classicJun 06, 2008

I don't know how long Rolex has been making this model, but mine is a decade old, and I know that the model was around for years before that. They haven't changed it because they have no reason to do so. It is unique and instantly identifiable. You either love the way it looks or you don't.
The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date that I have has never had a single problem. In ten or so years, I may have adjusted it five or ten minutes total. It never needs a battery, and it has only stopped once when I was immobilized in the hospital. (You do have to change the date manually in months that do not have 31 days and change the time when Daylight Savings comes around.) It is quite easy to read. It is also quite comfortable and seemingly indestructible. I have never needed to be careful with it at all. Occasionally, you might polish it, but the color never turns.
You have the option of adding diamonds to it, but I think that ruins the look by making something subtle look too flashy. The Oyster makes its quiet statement, but doesn't flaunt it.
Obviously, the price is extremely high (although not a bad investment - my watch is most likely worth 25% more than I paid for it.) However, as the salesman pointed out, it is perhaps the one thing I look at most each day, and it's nice to see the calm, unchanging face of (to me) beauty.

This is a nice flashy watch, but after 6 years it lost the ability to keep time accurately or to change the date on its own. I have found watch repairs obscenely expensive (a single link is another $500). It's a bit embarrassing to wear the world's flashiest watch when it doesn't keep accurate time.

I've had mine for over twenty years now with NO problems whatsoever. Of course, with something so expensive, you really need to take it to a trusted watch repair/retailer once every five years or so to have it cleaned and serviced in order to keep the parts lubricated and the timekeeping mechanism as accurate as possible.
The price of these with the 18K gold keeps going up and up. The retail is over 300% higher than what I paid for mine over two decades ago.
You can't go wrong with this fabulous timepiece. It's heavy, it's waterproof to 300 feet, it's rugged; the crystal is scratchproof, it's very accurate for a non-quartz, non-battery assist watch. The automatic winding with movement mechanism is fool proof.
The only time this watch stops is if you've had it OFF your wrist for a couple of days.
For my money, this is the ONLY watch you'd ever need. It fits in with any social occasion or just wearing as an every day watch that you can be proud of.
It's as dependable as the sunrise, as substantial as the national debt and as beautiful as the sunset.
This is a watch for the ages. The Rolex President 18K Gold Day-Date Oyster Perpetual; what a timepiece!!!
