| | | | | Home » American Sign Language Interpreter Training: Receptive Skills Practice - DVD Video Volume 1 | | | | | | | Description: | | Being an ASL interpreter is a labor of love. There are a number of steps and processes
that every interpreter needs to use each and every time he or she interprets. One of the fundamental abilities that an interpreter must develop in order to work closely and efficiently with Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing consumers is the maintenance and bolstering of receptive skills.
Throughout the video, there will be 5 chapters containing ASL Storytelling where Avery Posner will be teaching about several animals in the Central Park Zoo as well as a dramatic story about a successful animal rescue operation. In every
chapter, viewers will first see a complete story without audio or captions. Immediately following the story, there will be over 50 training questions four
main activities to aid interpreters and ASL students to develop receptive skills:
- Fingerspelling Check
- Fact Check
- Idiom & Phrase Check
- Sign-to-Voice Check
As a bonus, you will learn seven additional commonly used idioms and phrases in
American Sign Language. Gilda Ganezer and Avery Posner will present the idioms
and then show you how to use them in complete sentences.
An ASL Music video along with series of bloopers will be included, also as a bonus feature! | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

FantasticFeb 03, 2010
By David Porter Willis This DVD is one of the best sources of current and relevant material for use in training ASL interprters. As a graduate of Gallaudet University and more than 30 years of Sign Language experience I found this very helpful in providing very up-to-date material in an easy learning format.Recommend it highly to both students and experienced interpreters.

A great challenge for the beginning student interpreterAug 05, 2009
By melrose I just got this and was pleasantly surprised that it had some challenge to help me improve. I have not yet taken interpreter courses, but am an intermediate/advanced ASL student. This is perfect for me. I enjoy the other programs that everyday ASL has to offer, so I was looking forward to when this one came out. I'm not disapointed. I can't wait til the others come out. They are good at what they do.
Thanks!

Not enough receptive materialJun 18, 2011
By cdberg As with their expressive video, these dvd's COULD be a very valuable resource for interpreting practice if you were given more actual interpreting opportunities. You are only given about a 2 minute segment to interpret then there's a 5 minute video of an animal wondering around. If I wanted to watch animals I could visit the zoo myself! Very misleading when the DVD says it's 102 minutes long; understand that you only really get about 10 minutes overall interpreting practice time, the rest is mostly videos and bloopers. The content to interpret is good and the vocab and idiom checks are nice but the content is just not enough.
from an intermediate signer.....Apr 07, 2012
By G.W. I loved this CD. I look forward to ordering more. I am latenned deaf and so my signing skills are good but not great. This CD was set up perfectly as you do not have to keep rewinding to review and check things, they review everything as you move along. Each time you watch it you learn more. Well done. Good for anyone who wants to improve ASL skills. Good for working on both receptive and expressive ASL. Highly recommended.
Glad I purchased it,
intermediate signer
